The Bus Terminal At Iwo Road, New Ife Road, Challenge And Ojoo Will Be Commissioned In 2021

Our Assessment

While the administration successfully delivered the Challenge and Ojoo bus terminals in April 2022 (missing the 2021 deadline but within the first tenure), the Iwo Road and New Ife Road terminals remained under construction, with government sources citing the global pandemic as hindrance.

Why It Matters

Ibadan is one of Nigeria’s busiest transit hubs, often plagued by traffic congestion and disorganized motor parks at its entry points. Modern terminals are designed to centralize transport operations, improve security, and provide commuters with comfortable amenities like waiting halls and eateries. For the average citizen, the completion of these terminals reduces "roadside loading" that causes gridlock, creates a more dignified travel experience, and generates revenue for the state through organized transport levies and retail shop leases.

Challenge and Ojoo Terminals Operational in First Term as Iwo Road Interchange Completion Stalls

The Seyi Makinde administration flagged off the construction of the four terminals in May 2020 with an ambitious 12-month completion target.

The Challenge and Ojoo terminals were the first to reach completion and were commissioned in April 2022 by the Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki. These facilities are now fully operational, serving both intra-city and inter-state routes with modern features like automated ticketing and terminal lounges.

However, the Iwo Road and New Ife Road projects (Terminals 1 and 2) faced significant setbacks. As the primary gateway to Ibadan from Lagos and the North, the Iwo Road site required more complex engineering, including the construction of a pedestrian bridge to link the two terminals and the reconstruction of the 5.5 km Adegbayi Junction-Iwo Road Interchange road.

Makinde later attributed the missed 12-month completion projection to the COVID-19 pandemic and associated supply disruptions, saying the realities of the period “slowed us down” and that government therefore commissioned two of the four terminals in April 2022. They were eventually completed and commissioned by Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on November 12, 2025.
