Gov. Seyi Makinde Promises To Upgrade Lekan Salami Sports Complex In Adamasingba, Ibadan.

Our Assessment

This promise is rated Completed. The administration successfully remodeled the Lekan Salami Sports Complex within its first term, transforming it from a neglected facility into a modern sports hub. The main bowl was commissioned on September 1, 2021, featuring FIFA-standard infrastructure, including a natural grass pitch, modern floodlights, and upgraded seating.

Why It Matters

Sports infrastructure is a key driver for youth engagement and economic growth. For decades, the Lekan Salami Stadium had suffered from structural decay, making it unfit for high-level competitions. By upgrading the complex, the government provided a worthy home for the state's darling team, Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC), and positioned Oyo State to host national and international sporting events. This investment not only boosts the state's Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) through ticket sales and tourism but also provides a professional training ground for local athletes to hone their skills.

Makinde Delivers FIFA-Standard Sports Complex in Ibadan

The journey began on August 13, 2020, when Governor Makinde flagged off the remodeling project with a contract value of ₦5.58 billion, funded through the Alternate Project Funding Approach (APFA).

By September 2021, the first phase was delivered, including the expansion of the main bowl's capacity to 10,000 seats, the installation of state-of-the-art floodlights for night matches, and the creation of a FIFA-standard media center and studio. The facility also received a modern scoreboard, VAR facilities, and four world-class changing rooms.

Beyond the main football arena, the upgrade included the remodeling of the Squash Hall and the construction of a new multipurpose hall for basketball, volleyball, handball, and gym activities.

While the facility faced some maintenance challenges regarding its pitch quality later in 2023 and 2025, the structural transformation and commissioning were successfully achieved during the first mandate. The complex now serves as a central hub for various sporting disciplines, reflecting a significant upgrade from its previous moribund state.
