Upgrade Emmanuel Alayande College Of Education To A University Of Education

Our Assessment

The administration completed the upgrade of the college to a university during its first term. All legal bills were signed, and official federal recognition was secured from the National Universities Commission by late 2022.

Why It Matters

Upgrading this 126-year-old school allows it to award degrees instead of just certificates, which improves the quality of teacher training in the state. This change provides more opportunities for students to stay in Oyo State for their higher education and helps fill the need for qualified teachers in local schools. It also brings more funding and better career paths for the staff and the local community in Oyo town.

Progress So Far

Oyo State Secures University Status for Emmanuel Alayande College of Education

The process began in March 2021 when the state government approved the plan to turn the college into a university. The state house of assembly then passed a bill which the Governor signed into law on December 5, 2022, to give the new school a solid legal base

Shortly after the bill was signed, the National Universities Commission (NUC) gave the Governor an official letter of recognition in Abuja on December 16, 2022. This made the institution the 60th state university in Nigeria and the third one owned by the Oyo State government.

To get the university ready for its new role, a setup committee led by academic experts was started in January 2023 to design the school's new teaching plans and rules.

By the time the first term ended in May 2023, the institution had fully changed its status and was legally ready to operate as a full University of Education.
