Our Verdict

Governor Seyi Makinde promised to progressively grow Oyo State's monthly Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) to N7.5 billion, with the long-term goal that IGR alone would fund salaries and entitlements by the end of his second term (May 2027). This would make the state financially independent from federal allocations, stabilize worker payments, reduce debt reliance, and free up funds for development projects.

Oyo State reached N7.5 billion monthly IGR by early 2025 (295% growth from prior levels), with officials confirming sustained performance averaging N8.5 billion monthly in Q1 2025 and projecting N10 billion by term end, marking the progressive increase target as met while full salary self-funding remains aspirational.

Oyo State government has attributed its record of N103 billion internally generated revenue (IGR) in 2025 to the deliberate use of science, data and technology, surpassing the total IGR of the previous two administrations.

Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, made this known while addressing journalists at a 2-day Artificial Intelligence training organised by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) held at the American Open University, Global Campus, Ibadan.

Oyelade explained that the governor Seyi Makinde-led administration had achieved historic revenue milestone without increasing taxes, but through strategic digitization reforms, citing the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development as an example of MDAs which has blocked financial leakages, reduced fraud and expanded the state’s economic base.
