Our Assessment

Governor Seyi Makinde promised that in his second term (2023–2027), his administration would build 30 new model schools and construct/renovate 1,000 classrooms, with priority for underserved areas. This would mean more modern school buildings, reduced overcrowding, and better learning environments for pupils in rural and low‑income communities.

By mid‑second term, Oyo State has already completed 56 model schools (cumulatively) under UBEC/SUBEB interventions and other programmes, and reports show 315 new classrooms completed in 105 rural primary schools, with another 405 classrooms in a second phase plus additional renovations in 36 schools. The government has also earmarked ₦15 billion annually from 2024 specifically for school infrastructure renewal, indicating that the 1,000‑classroom target is being actively pursued rather than abandoned.

The “30 model schools + 1,000 classrooms” is a four‑year promise running to 2027, so it is too early to classify it as fulfilled or broken. Available evidence shows substantial ongoing work and budget backing toward the target.
